Munich Peace Conference on ver.di warning strike at Munich Airport: “Munich is not interested in the security conference”

The Munich Peace Conference organizing committee expresses its solidarity with the warning strike at Munich Airport on Friday, February 17, 2023, announced by the ver.di union. In its announcement of the warning strike, ver.di refers to the ongoing negotiations for public sector employees, ground handling services, and aviation security, which have so far been “virtually fruitless.” The warning strike is also expected to make it difficult for participants in the Munich Security Conference to travel to the event.

It is unclear whether the collision of the strike with the Munich Security Conference is a coincidence or intentional. However, in its announcement, ver.di explicitly refers to aid deliveries to Turkey and Syria and assures that these will not be hindered by the strike. The same precautions do not apply to the Munich Security Conference. In this respect, ver.di seems to be aware of which activities actually contribute to people’s safety and which do not.

For the organizers of the International Munich Peace Conference—the alternative event to the Security Conference—this is further evidence that Munich’s civil society is opposed to the Security Conference. “Munich is not interested in the Security Conference,” says Maria Feckl, organizer of the Peace Conference. “By excluding Russia and Iran from the Security Conference, it has finally lost its ostensibly diplomatic character. All that remains is a NATO-dominated military and arms summit.“ In contrast, the Peace Conference on Friday evening will feature a panel discussion entitled ”Civil Society and the Supposed ‘Turning Point’”. Among others, Sabine Gruber, chairwoman of the executive committee of the Bavarian regional board of ver.di, will take part in the panel discussion.
