“I regret to inform you that … the International Munich Peace Conference 2024 and probably also in the following years cannot be funded.”

A green-red city council motion, 14 days before the conference, wants to stop the City of Munich’s funding “immediately and in future”. Mr. Anton Biebl, Head of Cultural Affairs, has informed us that our wish to continue the funding cannot be granted. No decision has yet been issued.

If the signatories of the motion have their way, it is a done deal.
The signatories of the motion are:
Green Group – Rosa Liste (Initiative): Mona Fuchs, Clara Nitsche, David Süß, Marion Lüttig, Nimet Gökmenoglu, Ursula Harper, Andreas Voßeler
SPD/Volt parliamentary group: Felix Sproll, Julia Schönfeld-Knoe, Anne Hübner, Kathrin Abele, Lars Mentrup, Klaus Peter Rupp, Lena Odell, Marian Offmann

Just for your information: The Catholic Fund withdrew its promised funding on 9.2.2024.

Dear Ms. Feckl,

Thank you for your above-mentioned letter, in which you refer to the motion by the SPD/Volt and Die Grünen/RL parliamentary groups calling on the Department of Culture to critically scrutinize its funding landscape in light of the necessary consolidations and to no longer fund the “International Peace Conference” with immediate effect and in future. In this letter, you ask us to continue to support the International Munich Peace Conference and refer to the long tradition and importance of the event.

Unfortunately, I have to inform you that the Department of Culture cannot comply with this request and that the International Munich Peace Conference 2024 and probably also in the following years cannot be funded.

As you know, the funding of such a purely political event with global political issues from the cultural funds of the City of Munich has been under discussion for some time. The motion submitted by the SPD/Volt and Die Grünen/RL parliamentary groups on February 1st, 2024 now provides the Department of Culture with a framework that must be taken into account when interpreting the funding criteria.

I regret that this cancellation has been made at such short notice and that the sponsors are now facing a difficult situation.

Please also consider this letter as a reply from the Lord Mayor to your letter of the same name to him.

With kind regards

Biebl
