Cheerleaders for nuclear war:

Munich Security Conference survey on the fighting spirit in Ukraine

Maria Feckl, organizer of the International Munich Peace Conference, urges caution regarding the results of a survey conducted by the organizers of the Munich Security Conference in Ukraine. In the survey, Ukrainians overwhelmingly support continuing the fight against Russia—even in the event of Russia’s use of a “tactical nuclear weapon.” In an accompanying article in the Tagesspiegel on February 7, 2023, employees of the Security Conference interpret these results as the “united will” of the Ukrainian population. On this basis, it is argued that German politicians must not ignore Ukraine’s will to fight when it comes to the question of arms deliveries.

The survey is pseudoscientific because it was not conducted by an independent research institute, but by the lobby organization Kekst CNC, itself a sponsor of the MSC and whose Global Advisory Board—not coincidentally—includes the former head of the Security Conference, Wolfgang Ischinger. It is unclear according to what “representative” pattern Ukrainians were surveyed (for example, in occupied areas and on the front lines?). The survey is also cynical because it exploits Ukrainians tormented by war to reinforce the aggressive arguments of the organizers of the Security Conference. Based on these dubious methods, the pollsters of the Security Conference suggest a unified “will” of the Ukrainian population and place this “will” above other factors in the decision on arms deliveries. The following dangers are obviously less relevant to them: thousands of civilian war victims, destroyed cities, and above all, the danger of escalation into nuclear war.

Ultimately, the survey is disingenuous because the Security Conference and its participants have rarely acted on survey results—unless they like them. One example is the overwhelming and consistent rejection of the stationing of nuclear weapons in Germany. For decades, opinion polls have shown no change in the population’s attitude. Anyone who wants to find out firsthand what people from civil society—at least in Germany—really think about war should come to the International Munich Peace Conference at the Old Town Hall on Marienplatz in Munich on February 17, 2023, at 7 p.m. The Peace Conference offers a substantive alternative to the Security Conference.
