Press release from the International Munich Peace Conference dated February 22, 2022 – Maria R. Feckl
1.5°C and nuclear disarmament are our chance of survival
Review of the 20th International Munich Peace Conference

Emily Z. Binding, spokesperson for Fridays for Future Munich, assessed the
Sustainability of the coalition agreement with regard to the climate crisis. “Point 1: In principle, we can
throw him in the trash as he is, and it wouldn’t hurt anyone. Because if he’s just the same
is implemented, as the federal government has committed to doing, we will continue in 2025
away from compliance with the 1.5° limit. The coalition agreement is not 1.5° compatible.”
Emily Z. Binding’s generation will be the first generation that does not have the same quality of life
like the previous generation. The 1.5°C is their chance of survival. This is a
challenge that we can overcome together with science, moral courage, and
commitment.

IPPNW press release dated February 21, 2022:
NOBEL PEACE PRIZE-WINNING ORGANIZATION CALLS FOR MORATORIUM
Following the Munich Security Conference, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning organization IPPNW is calling for concrete steps toward a sustainable solution to the conflict between NATO and Russia in the spirit of détente and de-escalation.
The doctors’ organization advocates a moratorium on the admission of further NATO member states. It also believes that a conference on joint security and cooperation is necessary to negotiate a new European security architecture and cooperation on climate protection. During his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized that the question of Ukraine’s admission to NATO was not on the agenda during either of their terms in office. At the European level, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe could provide a forum for prevention and dialogue.
IPPNW has launched two appeals regarding the NATO-Russia conflict:
Appeal from IPPNW and IALANA: “Diplomacy instead of preparations for war”
International medical appeal: “No war in Europe!”

Lies pave the way for war—truth can bring peace!

Kiev is one of Munich’s twin cities – the mayor is a Mayor for Peace and supports, among other things, Germany’s signing of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW)! This is a wonderful sign that the peace conference is being initiated at the municipal level. But how close are we really as fellow citizens of these two cities in this tense situation? The peace conference also discusses geostrategic issues to a large extent. Admittedly, it does so less in terms of enemy stereotypes and threat analyses of Russian intervention, as in the mainstream media. The war and tensions in eastern Ukraine are omnipresent. Many of the speakers and activists on and off the podium focus on the opportunities for cooperative security, on improving and strengthening the OSCE and a new European peace order, and on suggestions for rethinking security.

The large demonstration was the culmination of a series of events against the security conference. These included “Praying for Peace” by Pax Christi and the International Munich Peace Conference. On the eve of the demonstration, the latter addressed the topics of the military use of nuclear energy and relations between Russia and Ukraine. Matthias Platzeck, former Minister-President of Brandenburg and Chairman of the German-Russian Forum, said in a video statement that Russia must be brought back into the European fold.

Security conference: Everyone is talking about war—let’s talk about peace
Bavaria needs more commitment to peace policy
When the 2022 Security Conference takes place this weekend, the participants of the International Peace Conference will also be meeting here in Munich at the same time. However, it is not only public attention that is unevenly distributed, but also the support that the Bavarian state government provides to both events. I submitted a question to the plenary session to find out from the state government how much it subsidizes the Munich Security Conference, what specific measures this enables, and what financial support the state government provides to the International Peace Conference taking place in Munich at the same time.
