Workshop 2: Theater of the Oppressed – Explorative Play on Conflict, Peace and Security

Making peace tangible

with Caren Niemann

Saturday, February 14, 2026 | 10-12 a.m.

In this two-hour Theater of the Oppressed workshop of the Peace Conference 2026, we will work with methods of the Theater of the Oppressed to make peace, conflict and security tangible. In an explorative, body-oriented game, we will explore how these concepts are effective in our everyday lives, in political debates and in social power relations.

Through movement, improvisation and scenic play, forms of expression emerge that are not argumentative but experience-based. The subsequent dialog ties in directly with these experiences and opens up new perspectives on scope for action, resistance and solidarity.

The workshop is aimed at anyone who wants to explore political issues beyond theory and discussion and try out new approaches to peace and conflict.
Previous knowledge or theater experience is not required.

The workshop is aimed at all those who:

  • seeking new approaches to peace and conflict
  • want to make political issues tangible beyond words
  • Have a desire to explore creatively together

👉 No theater experience required.
Curiosity, openness and a willingness to participate are sufficient.

About the format: Theater of the Oppressed The Theater of the Oppressed is an internationally applied method of political education and peace work. It combines physical work, collective learning and social reflection and opens up new ways of making power relations, conflicts and scope for action visible.

Why Theater of the Oppressed fits in with the peace conference

The Theater of the Oppressed workshop opens up a special approach to questions of peace and conflict that goes beyond discussion and analysis. Participants gain new perspectives on how power, oppression and scope for action are effective in their own everyday lives and in social structures. The physical experience makes political contexts directly tangible and emotionally comprehensible.

Especially in the context of a peace conference, the Theater of the Oppressed creates a space in which abstract concepts such as security, violence and solidarity become concrete. The workshop strengthens perception, empathy and the ability to consciously perceive conflicts and explore alternative options for action – key skills for peace work and social engagement.
