International law knows no reason of state: stop arms exports to Israel
“Action Outcry – Stop the Arms Trade!” massively criticizes the arms exports worth around 24.5 million euros to Israel that the German government has approved in the last three months. Since the beginning of March, the Israeli government has stopped humanitarian aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip and broken the ceasefire negotiated in January. Syria has been under attack for months in violation of international law and the Israeli army has also continued its attacks in Lebanon despite the ceasefire.
“The arms exports to Israel amounting to around 24.5 million euros approved by the old German government from January to March 2025 are a slap in the face, as they massively contradict Germany’s national and international legal obligations. There is a clear risk that the weapons supplied from Germany could be used by the Israeli army to commit violations of human rights and international law in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, Syria and Lebanon. The law must remain the law and apply without restriction,” says Gerold König, spokesperson for “Action Outcry – Stop the Arms Trade!” and Federal Chairman of pax christi – German Section e.V.
“Israel’s army has been attacking refugee camps in the West Bank for months and has now displaced tens of thousands of Palestinians. In Syria, it has repeatedly attacked areas in violation of international law and repeatedly broken the ceasefire agreements in Lebanon. Now the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip is also being bombed in the truest sense of the word. In addition, since the beginning of March, the suffering population in the Gaza Strip has once again been completely cut off from aid supplies and electricity. Together with the recent attacks on UN and Red Cross buildings in the Gaza Strip, this shows in a depressing way that the Israeli government and army are blatantly violating their obligations under international law,” König continued.
“The war in the Gaza Strip, but also in Lebanon and the attacks on Syria, as well as the maintenance of the illegal occupation, including in the West Bank, have shown that Israel misuses military force for purposes other than legitimate self-defense. Accordingly, the recently issued arms export licenses must be revoked. And the new German government must not approve any arms exports to Israel as long as there is a risk that Germany will be in breach of its legal obligations. Instead, it must do everything in its power to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches the Gaza Strip again and that the fighting is stopped immediately,” said Susanne Weipert, coordinator of “Action Outcry – Stop the Arms Trade!”.
