Nirit Sommerfeld

was born in Eilat (Israel) on the Red Sea. She grew up there, in East Africa and in Germany. Acting training at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Nirit works as a freelance actress and singer. She is a blogger, writes scripts and other texts, works as a speaker, director, coach, organizer and presenter in front of and behind the camera and ran her own artist agency for years. In 1998 she founded the band KLEZMORIM, with which she tours today in an expanded line-up and under the name ORCHESTRA SHLOMO GEISTREICH. For two years she was the artistic director of the Kleines Theater Haar. With the Syrian dancer Mouna Sabbagh she produced the stage project SALAM SHALOM, with which she performed in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy. Together with writer Linda Benedikt, she wrote the musical political revue REALITY CHECK about the Israeli reality of occupation. Since 2010, she has designed and accompanied political trips to Israel and Palestine to give people a differentiated view of the current situation in the region.

Nirit Sommerfeld has two daughters and lives with her husband and dog near Munich.

“Reconciliation projects abound in Israel/Palestine. There are very committed people on both sides. This region has the highest density of NGOs in the world. If the populations of both sides were left to each other, there would be far fewer problems. However, the wall and politics deliberately prevent people from coming together. My concern is first to end the occupation; I support two projects to that end.”

We welcome Nirit Sommerfeld at the International Munich Peace Conference 2016 on the one hand as one of the main speakers on the topic of “Reconciliation Projects in Israel/Palestine” and, on the other hand, she designs the cultural contribution of the event.

Nirit Sommerfeld performs at the Peace Conference as a trio with her ORCHESTRA SHLOMO GEISTREICH. Accompanied by Robert Probst on piano and Andi Arnold on clarinet, the Israeli-born singer sings klezmer-inspired songs about the two most important themes in life: the longing for love and the longing for peace.

Short self-portrayal
from Heidi Meinzolt

As a member of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom/IFFF (www.wilpf.de), Engl. Women’s International league for peace and freedom/WILPF(www.wilpf.int.ch), a women’s peace organization since 1915, I am responsible for the representation of the German section in the international organization and deal with European politics and coordinate the Middle East work.

I am a member of the steering group of the Women’s Security Council in Germany (www.un1325.de), which focuses on the implementation of UN res 1325 – and thus the participation of women in conflict resolution and in democratic processes – and engages in national and international political lobbying with alternatives to conventional “security policy” and special attention to the gender component. Crucial to this commitment are three “Ps”: prevention, participation, and protection.

Professionally, I was a high school teacher and responsible for the supervision of several international exchange projects (in Europe and Africa) at the school.
