Tomorrow we will see the flag of mourning on all public buildings in Germany. Because on January 27, Germany commemorates the victims of National Socialism. On this day 77 years ago, soldiers of the Red Army liberated the survivors of the Auschwitz death camp, where more than a million people were murdered. To mark this occasion, the Bundestag has commemorated the millions of victims of National Socialism every year on January 27 since 1996.
77 years after liberation, fewer and fewer contemporary witnesses are alive to share their personal experiences of Nazi persecution and to commemorate the crimes. It remains all the more important to keep the memory alive.
