Fittingly, the message from pax christi from March 25, 2025

International law knows no reason of state: stop arms exports to Israel

“The arms exports to Israel amounting to around 24.5 million euros approved by the old German government from January to March 2025 are a slap in the face, as they massively contradict Germany’s national and international legal obligations. There is a clear risk that the weapons supplied from Germany could be used by the Israeli army to commit violations of human rights and international law in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, Syria and Lebanon. The law must remain the law and apply without restriction,” says Gerold König, spokesperson for “Action Outcry – Stop the Arms Trade!” and Federal Chairman of pax christi – German Section e.V.

“The war in the Gaza Strip, but also in Lebanon and the attacks on Syria, as well as the maintenance of the illegal occupation, including in the West Bank, have shown that Israel misuses military force for purposes other than legitimate self-defense. Accordingly, the recently issued arms export licenses must be revoked. And the new German government must not approve any arms exports to Israel as long as there is a risk that Germany will be in breach of its legal obligations. Instead, it must do everything in its power to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches the Gaza Strip again and that the fighting is stopped immediately,” said Susanne Weipert, coordinator of “Action Outcry – Stop the Arms Trade!”.

Active for Palestine and Israel (without flags) in Munich

We are affected by the ongoing violence in the Middle East. We care about people and human rights. We want to walk together peacefully and meet people who feel the same way. We all have our biographies, life experiences and opinions. We live in unique information bubbles. We may not agree on many aspects. But we all agree that we want the violence to end.

For a just peace in Palestine and IsraelProtect the civilian population, stop arms exports!

We demand from the Federal Government:

  • Make every effort to achieve an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire. Only a ceasefire will create the conditions for an end to the killings and for the release of hostages and unlawfully detained people.
  • Do not supply arms to Israel if there is a risk that they will be used in violation of international law.
  • Support international jurisdiction without restrictions to end decades of impunity.
  • In accordance with the opinion of the International Court of Justice of July 19, 2024, do everything in your power to put an end to the illegal occupation, the construction of settlements in violation of international law and the displacement of the Palestinian population in the West Bank.
  • Protect freedom of expression and freedom of assembly in Germany: Protection against discrimination, racism and anti-Semitism must not be played off against the right to peaceful protest.

We are witnessing a staggering escalation of violence and suffering in Palestine and Israel. In the current war, over 44,000 people have already been killed in Palestine and over 1,200 people in Israel since October 7, 2023. Around 100 hostages are still in Gaza. At least 104,000 Palestinians have been wounded and countless are missing. Almost the entire population of Gaza, 1.9 of the 2.1 million inhabitants, has already been displaced within their country several times. Around 100,000 Israelis have been evacuated since last October.

There is no safe place in the entire Gaza Strip. Israel’s deliberate withholding of humanitarian aid, food, clean drinking water and medical care poses an acute threat to the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in Gaza. And in the West Bank, people are more vulnerable than ever to the violence of the army and settlers.

We will not and cannot remain silent about all this. We condemn all war crimes in this war, both those of Hamas and other armed Palestinian groups, as well as those of the Israeli government. We mourn all the victims of violence in Palestine and Israel. We grieve for the thousands who are arbitrarily detained in Israel and often subjected to torture and ill-treatment. We grieve for those who have been taken hostage in Gaza. We stand in solidarity with all those who are fighting for peace and equal rights for all people in the region.

While the German government rightly condemns the war crimes committed by Hamas, it does not even name the war crimes committed by the Israeli government and army as such. Moreover, through its political actions it is condoning Israel’s actions in Gaza, which violate international law. The German government is weakening international jurisdiction by taking sides unilaterally.

In Germany, we are experiencing massive encroachments on freedom of expression and assembly in the context of Palestine solidarity. We clearly oppose the criminalization of legitimate protests and take our criticism of the war in Gaza and the role of the German government to the streets ourselves.

We are taking to the streets to make it clear: A reason of state that applies double standards to human rights and international law benefits no one and – despite the repeated political declarations – does not contribute to Israel’s security either. Human rights and international law are universal. Human lives must not be subject to double standards: Palestinian life is just as precious as Israeli life.

Middle East/Palestine/Israel

We believe in a future in which all people live in peace with dignity, equality, justice and freedom.

We want to set up a protest group – eogether with like-minded supporters. If you believe in non-violent co-resistance, in upholding the values of freedom, equality, security and dignity for all in the Middle East, please support us.

We will update this page as our group grows and publish protest actions here.

Concept for the protest without flags:
Ceasefire for Gaza and stop all arms exports!

Protest for a free and secure Israel-Palestine of all people who want to support this cause.

When we walk together, we express our need to feel safe, free and comfortable with each other, here in Munich, here in Germany.

Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, as well as discrimination in general, are on the rise. We want to see and invite Jewish, Muslim and Christian people, people of all religions and ethnicities, including atheists, to walk together and wish for peace, freedom and security for all people.

It will be a rather quiet protest, walking together. We will talk to each other mindfully and respectfully. If we are upset in a conversation, we will breathe a sigh of relief, seek comfort from people who agree with us and do our best to calm down.

We will leave empty-handed: No flags. Flags can inadvertently be a trigger associated with violence against other people. No photos that can trigger trauma in people. Anyone can find them if he or she wants to see them.

We will carry banners with the following inscriptions:
Freedom for all people in the Middle East – No double standards!
Equality for all people in the Middle East – No double standards!
Security for all people in the Middle East – No double standards!
All war criminals on trial – No double standards!
For a just peace in Gaza! Stop arms exports & end the aid blockade!

The idea is that together we strengthen our sense of security and peace here and now. No one should take personal risks, be afraid of being censored, lose their job or be ridiculed for taking part in this protest, which should bring us closer together. Those who provoke or escalate will be excluded from the peace march. May this joint protest give us comfort, togetherness and a sense of peace.
