Gershon BaskinBehind the scenes of peace – The role of external actors in conflict negotiations

Dr. Gershon Baskin will speak on February 15, 2025, 6:30-9:30 p.m. at smartvillage, Rosenkavalierplatz 13, Arabellapark.

“Strategic thinking requires the ability to shape events, policies and decisions in a way that creates a different reality.” (Gershon Baskin)

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Gershon Baskin, a renowned expert on conflict resolution and co-initiator of negotiations between Israel and Hamas, as a speaker at the Munich International Peace Conference 2025. Dr. Baskin’s remarkable work, especially in secret negotiations, has shown how important back-channel communication can be for conflict resolution.

In his speech, Dr. Baskin will provide insights into the challenges and opportunities of such negotiations. Particularly relevant for our audience is the question of how external actors – such as Germany, the EU or civil society organizations from these regions – can (or cannot) influence back-channel communication and negotiations between Israel and Hamas and other parties to the conflict. This question is central as it sheds light on the role of international solidarity and diplomacy in one of the most complex conflicts of our time.

Dr. Baskin will also address what factors help or hinder the success of such efforts and what effective support from external actors might look like. We look forward to hearing his perspectives and invite you to join us for this important discussion.
