Tank

  • Are the Leopard main battle tank or the Marder infantry fighting vehicle a quick fix for Ukraine?
  • The former military policy advisor to former Chancellor Merkel doubts this.
  • You have to think about the Ukraine war from the end, says Brigadier General (ret.)

Former military policy advisor to former Chancellor Angela Merkel, retired Brigadier General Erich Vad, has spoken out against the delivery of heavy weapons to Ukraine. Such deliveries are potentially a “path to World War III,” Vad told Deutsche Presse-Agentur.

Apart from that, complex weapon systems such as the Leopard main battle tank or the Marder infantry fighting vehicle can only be operated and deployed properly after years of training, Vad said. They are therefore of no military use to the Ukrainians at present and for the foreseeable future.

“We’re doing a lot of war rhetoric right now – out of good sense ethics,” Vad said. “But the road to hell, as we all know, is always paved with good intentions. We need to think about the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine from the end. If we don’t want World War III, sooner or later we have to get out of this military escalation logic and start negotiations.”
