These included long-term missions in Haiti, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq and Sierra Leone as well as shorter missions in Syria, the Balkans, Somalia, the Sahel and Central Asia. In 2017, he published the book “On Building Peace: Rescuing the Nation-state and Saving the United Nations
In his view, we live in a world that is increasingly caught in the stranglehold of violence and war. So we have to ask ourselves: how do we get out of this situation and what kind of world do we want to live in?
