Protection of conscientious objectors from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine
On the initiative of Grüne Alternative e.V., a petition was submitted to the Bundestag. If 50,000 signatures are collected by December 8, the Petitions Committee of the Bundestag will deal with the matter in a public meeting. Representatives of the government will also be present.
We must work to protect those people who have chosen not to kill, regardless of which country they come from. This is an important opportunity to bring the issue of conscientious objection into the public debate. Conscientious objectors need our protection.
The right to conscientious objection is a human right. We therefore call on all politicians in the Bundestag to stand up for the protection and asylum of conscientious objectors and deserters from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. We must support the people who have decided to say no to killing and against this war. At the same time, we call on the Bundestag to declare its solidarity with activists of the peace movement from the three countries.
Why is this important?
Russia, Belarus and Ukraine have severely restricted the right to conscientious objection. Men and women who refuse to serve in the armed forces face sanctions or criminal prosecution. The petition therefore calls for active support for pacifists and conscientious objectors from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. The German government should appeal to the Ukrainian, Russian and Belarusian governments to stop the persecution of conscientious objectors and grant them the right to conscientious objection. Mesarvot: Conscientious objection in Israel
Mesarvot is a network of anti-occupation activists whose aim is to support political conscientious objectors and promote public discourse on the subject. Mesarvot sees the political objection as an instrument to end the occupation and oppression of the Palestinian people. The organization was founded at the end of 2015 by activists from the so-called “objection community”. In recent years, they have supported numerous imprisoned objectors. These actions usually include personal support before imprisonment by former detained objectors who know the military prison from the inside, legal assistance, media coverage, help with writing a statement, solidarity demonstrations and international solidarity.
