on potential in itself. It plays out on three levels, the confrontation between the Western and
Eastern superpowers, at the level of Ukraine’s internal social antagonisms, and in the hitherto
little-noticed area between the U.S. and the EU. Military strategic as well as economic
Components are of great Meaning. Without a look at the history, the many
threads of the conflict cannot be unraveled. The risk of escalating the conflict is considerable.”
